The Used Oil Management Associations (UOMAs) presented the Canadian perspective on used oil management best practices during a global webinar hosted by the Product Stewardship Institute on May 25th, 2018. Over 200 participants registered for the webinar from 9 countries, including Canada, the United States, Belgium, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Philippines, and Singapore.

Best practices from Canadian programs were provided by David Lawes (BCUOMA) and Ethan Richardson (SARRC), while Frank Vanderpooten provided experiences in Belgium as director of Valorlub, and Detlev Bruhnke of Avista Oil discussed the process and benefits of re-refining oil in the USA and in Germany.

The webinar generated many ideas for follow up discussion. As part of a post-webinar survey, 100% of the respondents rated the quality of the speakers as good or excellent and supported continuation of the conversation about used oil management globally. The UOMAs will continue to share what we have learned from over 20 years of delivering Extended Producer Responsibility based recycling in Canada, and to learn from experiences across the world.
