For more than 34 years, Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) has managed recycling initiatives on behalf of the Government of Alberta.
Updates to the Used Oil Materials Recycling Program.
On May 7, 2026, the Government of Alberta announced changes to the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act through three Orders in Council. As part of these changes, Alberta’s Used Oil Materials Recycling Program will expand to include:
- Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)
- Windshield washer fluid
- Antifreeze
- Containers associated with these materials
These materials will transition from Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Hazardous and Special Products (HSP) program into the Used Oil Materials Recycling Program. Environmental fees will apply to all three container types and antifreeze liquid products only.
In addition, the maximum eligible container size under the program will increase from 30 litres to 50 litres.
When do these changes take effect?
The Environmental fees for the newly designated materials, along with the increased maximum container size, will take effect on August 1, 2026.
What does this mean to you?
Suppliers already registered in Alberta’s Used Oil Materials Recycling Program will be able to report these newly designated materials through their existing ARMA Connect registration for sales that occur on or after August 1, 2026.
Producers currently registered under Alberta’s EPR Hazardous and Special Products (HSP) program will need to submit an application to the Used Oil Materials Recycling Program using their existing account.
