Recycling Used Oil/Glycol (antifreeze) products just got easier

It’s official! The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is recycling used oil/glycol products! That’s good news for residents, businesses and industries in the province – and great news for the environment.

Over the summer UOMA Atlantic began the roll-out of the used oil/glycol recycling program across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Representatives of UOMA Atlantic visited or contacted over 400 garages and car dealerships to introduce the program and to establish community Collection Facilities. Over 100 Collection Facilities have been established to date – covering most of the regions of the province. While there’s still more outreach to be done, UOMA’s registered Collectors are now busy delivering infrastructure within the province to generators of used oil/glycol products. In addition, outreach has begun to the hundreds of Harbour Authorities in the province to help harbours get set up with the infrastructure they’ll need to safely collect and recycle used oil/glycol products at the harbours.

As of October 1st, Environmental Handling Charges (EHCs) have been introduced on the products covered in the program. Over the past few weeks, UOMA Atlantic delivered a public awareness advertising campaign to ensure that residents, businesses, and industries operating in Newfoundland and Labrador are aware of the new regulations in place and of the new program to recycle used oil/glycol products.

This fall, in Nova Scotia, representatives of UOMA Atlantic also visited or contacted over 1000 garages and car dealerships to introduce the program and to establish Collection Facilities. Over 300 Collection Facilities have been established to date for a program that will begin January 1, 2020.
