Alberta and BC are leading a UOMA initiative to expand the types of containers managed through their respective provincial programs to include additional automotive containers such as DEF, windshield washer, automotive additives, aerosols, and drums.
Between September and March 2022, Alberta undertook a series of steps to engage key stakeholder groups to understand their perspectives on the proposed expansion. Throughout this time Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) has also met monthly with the Used Oil Management Associations of Canada (UOMA Canada) to share information and discuss opportunities to align and harmonize programs as much as possible. The BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA) is working closely with ARMA and has also consulted with their members regarding the same proposed expansion list and is working through the feedback they received. The next steps will involve recommendations to provincial governments on expanded definitions to the designated materials the programs can recycle and analysis for setting new environmental fees on the expanded materials list and proposed incentive rates for recyclers.
On behalf of Alberta and BC, we thank you for your partnership in our programs and look forward to updating you later this year with more details regarding the expansion of our programs.
